The Fear of Fear Itself

Preference:
Saxbe, D. (2005,Nov/Dec). The Fear of Fear Itself. Psychology Today. Last Retrieved Feb 18, 2009, from http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-3930.html

Summary:
In this article, “The Fear of Fear Itself,” the author discusses that most of the people around the world feel sometimes, as if they couldn’t breathe well with fast heartbeat. They usually thought that it is a panic attack, but that as not the truth. Panic attack is a sudden feeling such as fast heart beat, nausea and vertigo. It is different from person to person. Panic happens because there is a problem in the brain. Also, the person is under stress. Some of them have a family history. So, they should get a doctor’s diagnosis and start with medical therapy, or cognitive-behavioral therapy, and work with themselves to cope with it.

Reaction:
Because my major is Psychology, I have a good experience with panic attacks. Most of the people when they came to my clinic thought they would die, and they were very anxious. I started with them to understand what panic attacks were, and what they were feeling? We need to work a lot to change their opinion about what they are feeling. Also, I usually work with psychiatry because they need anti depressants.

When I was a junior, my uncle was suffering with some panic symptoms and he thought it is a panic. He visited many heart doctors but all of them told him that it was nothing and his heart was good. I recommended that he to visit a psychiatrist and after that he knew what had happened and felt better.

I agree with this article that people who suffer from panic should fight depression with cognitive- behavior therapy. Some of them have bad ideas about medicine. But we can work with them to change it as much as possible. Also, people who follow our rules usually finished with these symptoms and they can live with no anxiety anymore.
